Neil Morris Harvey was born in Birmingham UK and studied painting and sculpture at the Royal Academy Schools, London. He won a Greenshield Foundation Scholarship and practiced for several years as a portraitist and history painter of predominantly religious subjects. His largest work to date has been a seven metre high mural of The Resurrection in a Catholic church in Birmingham, which received national press coverage.

 

In 2020, he and his wife Professor Sue Broadhurst, a specialist in Performance and Technology, moved to northern Tuscany, known as the Lunigiana, where they now live. He is at present coming to the end of extensive graphic preparations for a series of six panels, each in varying styles.

His main interest is the human figure, in interactive and aporetic situations. He does not, now, intend to offer distinct narratives or verbalistic explanations, but rather, to present ‘performed’ dramas from which the viewer can infer their own stories. In this he is perhaps influenced by his wife’s voluminous research into contemporary performance practice.

He clearly has stylistic debts to the past, but he does not wish, in T.S. Eliot’s words, to ‘restore old policies. Or follow an antique drum’. He intends to push into new visual territory, diversifying his practice, in ways which, hopefully, will not lapse into historical pastiche.
