The Moonlanding Series (La Serie dell’Allunagio)

These are works preparatory to a projected series of six panels, entailing 50 studies and 6 composition drawings (the latter not shown yet). Though they were begun just before leaving the UK, the overall title thus refers to ‘landing’ in The Lunigiana, the northernmost area of the region of Tuscany, which is often called ‘the land of the moon’, ‘la terra della luna’. Each cycle of works uses a different colour of the ‘colour wheel’, a circle of six colours used by artists and theorists to abbreviate, and to make a physical continuum from, the visible light spectrum. They have no narrative intent, though sometimes such interpretations suggest themselves. For each series of drawings towards a work, style is varied to represent the body with different qualities, solid, dissolving, fluid, metamorphotic, crystalline, incendiary.   

Each drawing is in pencil, chalk, charcoal and sometimes ink, on various coloured papers, 70-65cm x 50cm.
